The movie did make me understand the story better than the original film. I did have empathy for Gatsby, but found the over indulgence of the rich sickening. I thought Daisy was beautiful, but pathetic. Toby was great as the narrator and cousin. The acting was superb. I think Leonardo is good looking and a great actor, but I still like Robert Redford as Gatsby.

The Great Gatsby is visually stunning but words of praise stop there. An over the top attempt to make a near 100 year old American literary classic digestible to 21st Century audiences spoils what otherwise might have been a successful retelling of F. Scott Fitzgerald's love story. Hip Hop music by Jay Z, Kanye West, Beyonce, and others as the soundtrack to a period piece featuring stunning art production and costumes true to the 1920s is not just stupid, but insane. Direction meanders and never quite gets solidly on track. DiCaprio's performance as Gatsby is wonderful at times yet often seems lost and confused, Robert Redford's performance is far superior; in fact, the 70's film is far superior. Tobey Maguire is hard to watch, he is miscast. The movies finale falls flat, it lacks sufficient drama to make you really care that Gatsby meets his demise. But by this time, the only thing I could think of is... How much longer before this mess is over with. Skip it.

ABSOLUTELY true to the spirit of Fitzgerald's novel. Baz Luhrmann's magnificent film provides exactly what viewers want from a movie adaptation of a classic work--the visuals, the emotions, the key lines and themes--and then some. The intertwining of current music with some period jazz, as Luhrmann has explained, creates excitement so that the plot resonates here and now with exuberance, passion, humor (check out Gatsby nervously waiting to "Crazy in Love"), and despair.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire are brilliant, delivering definitive interpretations of Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway. Their charm, elegance, optimism, and pathos truly are Oscar worthy. The entire cast is splendid.
Sets & costumes are fantastic, depicting sumptuous wealth and gritty squalor with veracity.
The party scenes, especially for those growing up on MTV, are flat-out amazing and dreamy--complete with George Gershwin's always-stunning "Rhapsody in Blue" and fireworks.
An artistic wonder. See it!

First this was a toss up for me because Iron Man 3 was out, but Gatsby won out. I always love Leo and Toby as actors and seeing them both on the screen was great for me. I thought they both did a fantastic job. All the actors & dancers did a great job of making you feel like you were in the era. It made me wish I could be apart of that time. loved all the glitz & glam and seeing it in 3D made it better.
The music was good, but it was too much Jay-z and Beyonce tracks. Some music did fit the scene but I would have like to have heard more original tune for the soundtrack rather than old Jay and B track remixed to sound like 1920's music.
Other than that its pretty much a sad love story. I wish it had a different ending but when it comes to love nothing is ever perfect. I don't know how the book is, but I'm kind of curious about it now.

I re-read the book before I went to see it last night and noticed that much of the dialogue was taken directly from the book word by word, as well as many scenes. I think the actors fit perfectly with the characters and the costumes were amazing! The only reason I didn't like the movie was because it was 3D(stupid idea) and having Jay-Z's music playing in a 1920's themed movie? Definitely not a good idea. I recommend watching it, just not paying $15 to see it in 3D.
